Where God’s Fullness Meets Our Longing

“And to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:19

 

There is a beautiful paradox in this verse: how can we know something that surpasses knowledge? Paul’s prayer for the believers in Ephesus was not that they would understand God’s love in theory, but that they would experience it so deeply that it fills every part of their lives.

In our world, it is easy to equate fullness with accumulation. We measure success through wealth, security, or accomplishment. Yet the fullness of God is not about how much we possess, but about how fully our hearts are open to being filled by Him. Just as a vessel already filled with water cannot receive anything more, our souls cannot receive the fullness of God when they are crowded with worry, busyness, or the constant pursuit of more.

Paul reminds us that true fullness begins with knowing the love of Christ—an intimate, transforming knowledge that can’t be measured by spreadsheets or market returns. It is a love that frees us from anxiety about the future and reframes our understanding of abundance. When we rest in that love, generosity becomes joyful, contentment replaces comparison, and peace replaces pressure.

Many of the individuals and couples we serve discover this truth in profound ways. After decades of saving, building, and providing, they often find that their deepest longing is not for more assets but for greater alignment between their resources, their values, and their faith. When our lives and finances reflect the love of God flowing through us, we experience a richness no portfolio can replicate.

At the same time, we recognize that this season does not feel full for everyone. Holidays can stir deep joy, but they can also reopen deep sorrow. Some are entering this season after the loss of a loved one. Others are separated from family through distance, strained relationships, or circumstances they did not choose. Empty chairs and quiet spaces can make the celebration of the season feel complicated.

If that is you, may you be reminded that the fullness of God is not diminished by grief, and His love is not withheld in seasons of longing. Scripture tells us that He is near to the brokenhearted and close to those who are crushed in spirit. Even when our hearts feel fragmented, His love meets us in the very places that feel most empty. God does not ask us to manufacture joy, nor does He rush us through our pain. Instead, He gently fills the spaces created by loss with His presence, His comfort, and His peace that surpasses understanding.

So whether this season brings celebration or quiet reflection, overflowing tables or tender memories, may we open our hearts to the love that surpasses knowledge and experience again the fullness of God. Let His love steady us, sustain us, and shape our generosity toward others. And may His presence be especially near to those who are missing someone they love, carrying a heavy heart, or navigating this season with mixed emotions.

The fullness of God is for every one of us. May we each make room to receive it.
